New York's Triennial Registration for Podiatrists

A New York podiatry license is issued once, and the registration that goes with it is renewed every three years for $210. Each registration needs 50 hours of approved CE in a normal period, and prescribers owe the Department of Health a separate three-hour course attestation. Ankle surgery privileges register on the same cycle. How the pieces fit.

New York podiatrists re-register every three years for $210. Each registration requires 1.4 CE hours per month registered, 50 hours in a normal period, with at least 35 in podiatric medicine and surgery and no more than 25 home study. DEA-registered prescribers also attest to three hours of pain, palliative care and addiction training every three years.

New York separates the license from the registration. The license is issued once. The registration is renewed every three years, with a fee and proof of continuing education each time (Educ. Law 7004(8), (9)). For a podiatrist with licenses in several states, it is the one renewal that runs on a three-year clock.

What does a New York podiatry registration cost?

Education Law 7004(8) sets the fees: $220 for admission to a department exam and an initial license, $115 for each reexamination, $135 for an initial license when no department exam is needed, and $210 "for each triennial registration period." NYSED's license requirements page states the combined licensure and first registration fee as $377. After that, each triennial registration is $210. These are NYSED fees paid by the podiatrist.

How much CE does each registration need?

Education Law 7004(9) requires satisfactory evidence of continuing education at each re-registration. NYSED's podiatry guidelines turn that into a number: "1.4 hours of continuing education coursework for each month of the preceding registration period in which you were registered to practice (50 hours in a normal three-year period)." The coursework must be approved by the State Board for Podiatry, and:

  • Category A: at least two-thirds, 35 hours, in podiatric medicine and surgery.
  • Category B: the remaining 15 hours may be in health sciences or practice issues such as ethics or risk management.
  • Home study: no more than 25 credits in any three-year period.
  • CPME courses: courses approved by CPME automatically qualify in New York.

Because the requirement is calculated by month, a podiatrist registered for only part of a period owes a prorated amount. For courses that need the board's own approval, NYSED approves out-of-state courses only if they are also offered in New York, where they can be audited, and never approves a course held on a cruise.

What other training does New York require?

NYSED lists two training requirements for licensure:

  • Child abuse identification and reporting, under Education Law 6507(3)(a), from an approved provider.
  • Infection control and barrier precautions, approved coursework appropriate to the practice to prevent transmission of HIV and hepatitis B.

Separately, the Department of Health requires prescribers licensed in New York who hold a DEA registration to complete at least three hours of coursework or training in pain management, palliative care and addiction once every three years, and to attest to completion online. That attestation goes to the Department of Health, not to NYSED, so it is easy to miss. More in opioid and mandatory courses by state.

Do ankle surgery privileges renew too?

Yes, on the same cycle. A standard or advanced ankle surgery privilege is valid for life unless revoked, but the holder must register it with the department in the same manner as the license, certify continued eligibility at each registration, and pay a $210 registration fee. The registration period runs with the podiatry registration (Educ. Law 7009(3)). Once you hold the advanced privilege, NYSED says you no longer need to register the standard one. See New York's ankle surgery privileges.

Do limited permits follow the same cycle?

NYSED's limited permit for supervised practice and its limited residency permit each cost $105, with $50 for a renewal. These are separate from the triennial registration and expire on their own schedules; residents should plan the switch to a full license before the permit runs out. See residency and training licenses.

How does New York fit with other licenses?

New York's three-year registration is unusual. Most states renew every one or two years, and Illinois counts CE over a fixed two-year window ending January 31 of odd years. A podiatrist licensed in New York and New Jersey, or New York and Pennsylvania, will have staggered deadlines and overlapping but different CE windows. One calendar per license avoids surprises; see keeping several renewals on one calendar. New York also has no endorsement route for podiatrists from other states; the full application is described in New York has no endorsement for podiatrists.

How can we help?

Annual Renewal & CE Tracking is $199 per license per year (pricing). For New York we track the registration date, prorated CE, the Category A and home study limits, the Department of Health prescriber attestation, and any ankle privilege registrations. You complete the courses and the attestation and pay NYSED directly. The New York state page summarizes the license.
